Classroom transformations have been such a hit in my classroom for over six years. Each year, I try to add a simple yet engaging one to my bag of tricks. After some brainstorming, I had an aha moment and came up with a Golf Theme Classroom Transformation. I mean, who doesn’t love a good round of mini golf and the classroom is perfect for just that!
Things to remember:
✴️ You can make this transformation as simple or as elaborate as you want. Just a few minor changes will have your students excited to be in the classroom.
✴️ You can also choose how long you want the transformation to last:
- make it a one day transformation
- or choose different skills to practice using the same theme and spread it out during the week
✴️ During our classroom transformation, we reviewed main ideas and supporting details using a golf theme to prepare for our statewide standardized test. However, you can use this same concept with just about any subject, skill, or standard.
✴️ It works well for:
- whole group instruction,
- small group work,
- and even centers.
✴️ You can use the concept with:
- worksheets,
- task cards,
- or slides.
✴️ You can make all the holes look the same and assign one hole for every two students or you can make each hole look different and have students move around the classroom.

1. Golf Classroom Transformation Decor Ideas
✴️ A few themed tablecloths or plain green tablecloths from Dollar Tree will help set the stage.
✴️ One of my favorite things to do to help build anticipation is to create or purchase a door sign that relates to the theme.
2. Props
✴️ You will need some sort of hole. (I created ours using 20 oz styrofoam cups)
✴️ Each student will need a golf club. (We used rulers)
✴️ Make sure each student has their own golf ball. You can either buy foam golf balls, or ping pong balls. I suggest you number the balls, so the students know which one is there’s should it go rolling around the classroom.
3. Outfit
✴️ A golf shirt and a visor is all you need.
4. Activities
✴️ You can use any task card set or worksheet you own. Set up the holes around the classroom and give each student their own ball. As students choose the correct answers, they get a chance to make the ball into the hole.
✴️ We used the golf theme main idea and supporting details review during our classroom transformation.
- I assigned one hole for every two students and gave each student their own numbered ball.
- I projected the digital task card on the screen and gave students a moment to write their answer on their response board.
- At the count of 3, every student held up their response board.
- I then projected the answer slide on the board.
- If students got the answer correct, they had the opportunity to hit their ball into the hole to score a point.
- We proceeded until we went through all the question slides.
4. Creating the HOLE for the your Golf Theme Classroom Transformation
- Purchase 20 oz styrofoam cups
- Use a pair of scissors to cut a small portion of the cup (It should be wide enough for the ball to slide all the way to the back of the hole)
- Use a hot glue gun or glue to stick the cup to a piece of green cardstock or construction paper
- Print out or create flags (the resource above includes flags numbered 1-18)
- Stick the flag onto a straw and tape the flag to the back of the cup
