It’s April, and that means a heightened awareness of treating the Earth respectfully. Our class has already began to learn about how we can make a difference by conserving resources. We read a passage from “A Comprehensive Earth Day Unit,” which discusses different resources we get from our plant and how we can conserve them. We then watched a couple of videos on YouTube about the history of Earth Day, and different things kids could do to help out. One of my favorite videos was about a group of students in an Australian school who took 5 minutes everyday to make a huge difference. Check it out here:
We then made a web of things we learned we could do to help take care of our planet. Students were paired up to choose one idea, and then come up with a slogan and picture for a poster that would be posted outside of our classroom. Once the students came up with their plan, they each made a poster using the template from “A Comprehensive Earth Day Unit.”
They came up with some really great slogans. Some of them were:
~ Don’t cut them down, you’ll make them frown.
~ Turn off the light, make things right!
~ Smoke is NO JOKE!
Students are now more aware of things they can do each day to make a difference in our world. It has been great to see students remind each other to place papers in the recycling bin instead of the garbage can, and to turn off the lights as they walk out of the classroom. I am looking forward to planning some other great events for them this month to bring even more awareness. Like some of students mentioned, Earth day shouldn’t just be celebrated April 22nd, but EVERY DAY! I agree. What do you do to celebrate Earth Day with your students?
